A soundbar balanced on a shelf under a wall-mounted TV always looks like an afterthought, because it is one. Mounted properly it sits square, centred and floating with the screen — and nothing rattles when the bass hits.
Why mounting it beats standing it up
Most soundbars ship with a little stand, and most people use it because it's there. It works, but it costs you three things.
It fills your shelf. A 40-inch bar takes the whole surface, so the console below the TV stops being useful for anything else.
It's rarely centred. Sitting on furniture, a bar lines up with the cabinet rather than the screen. Once you notice it's off-centre you can't stop noticing.
It buzzes. A bar resting on a hollow media unit turns it into a resonating box. Mounted to the wall, that stops entirely.
Mounted, it also sits at ear height rather than firing across a coffee table, which is what it was designed for.
Does your soundbar even come with a bracket?
Worth checking before you buy anything. Most soundbars include a wall bracket in the box — often a thin metal plate taped inside the packaging that people throw out with the polystyrene. If yours has one, that's all we need.
Sonos and Bose are the two that usually don't. They tend to need a proprietary mount sold separately, and the manufacturer's own version is rarely cheap for what it is.
Third-party equivalents are widely available on Amazon, frequently for about half the price, and for most models they do the same job. We'd rather tell you that than quietly sell you the expensive one — order it before the appointment and we'll fit it.
And if you haven't got the right mount at all, it's usually still hangable. We put up a Sonos Playbar recently for someone without the official bracket. Send a photo of the back of the bar when you book and we'll tell you honestly whether it can be done properly or whether it's worth ordering the part first.
How we set it up
The bar goes directly below the TV, centred to the screen rather than the furniture, with a consistent gap. If your TV is on a full-motion mount we account for the swing so the bar never fouls the arm.
Cables get run the same way as the TV's — visible and tidy, in an external strip, or inside the wall if you're already having that done. A soundbar adds a power lead and usually one HDMI, and those are the two that end up dangling if nobody plans for them.
It's $60 added to any install, and adds roughly twenty minutes to the visit. Booking it at the same time as the TV is much cheaper than a separate trip later.
