HARMONY REMOTE DISCONTINUED? HERE'S WHAT TO DO NOW

Your Harmony still works. The question is what happens the next time you buy a new TV — and how to make sure your next remote can't be switched off by someone else.

What Actually Happened

In April 2021 Logitech announced it would stop making Harmony remotes. It didn't kill the ones already out there: the app and the setup servers kept running for existing owners, which is why the Harmony on your coffee table still works.

What changed is that no new models are coming, and stock has long since dried up. If yours breaks, you're buying used.

Why Logitech Walked Away

Logitech never gave a detailed reason, but the usual explanations all point the same way:

The market shrank. Smart TVs, streaming boxes and HDMI-CEC mean an Apple TV or Roku remote can now run the TV and soundbar on its own. Most people stopped needing a universal remote.

It was expensive to keep alive. Harmony relied on a huge cloud database of device codes that had to be updated for every new TV, cable box and soundbar — for a product people buy once and keep for years, with no subscription.

Logitech had bigger things to sell. Webcams, headsets and gaming gear boomed while remotes stood still.

The Real Risk: The Cloud

Harmony is programmed through Logitech's servers. As long as those stay up, you're fine. If they ever go away, your remote keeps doing what it does today — but you lose the ability to add a new TV or change anything.

That's the lesson worth taking into your next purchase: prefer gear that works locally, without depending on one company's servers.

How To Keep Your Harmony Going

Connect the hub to Home Assistant. If you have a Harmony Hub (Elite, Companion, or the Hub on its own), Home Assistant can control it over your home network. You can start “Watch TV” from your phone, a voice assistant or an automation, and use the hub as a Wi-Fi IR blaster for fans, ACs and soundbars.

Replace the battery. Many “dead” Elites and 950s just have a worn-out battery. Replacements are cheap.

Buy a spare. Used Harmony remotes turn up on eBay. If yours is perfect, a backup is cheap insurance.

Make your last changes now. If a new TV or soundbar is coming, set it up while the app still works.

Can you flash it? Not practically — the firmware is closed and there's no maintained open-source replacement. Home Assistant gets you most of the benefit without opening anything up.

When It's Time To Replace It

Budget: SofaBaton — the closest thing to a cheap Harmony, with an app and activities.

Enthusiast: Unfolded Circle — a premium touchscreen remote with built-in Home Assistant support.

Local and future-proof: Home Assistant with an IR blaster (Broadlink, SwitchBot, or a custom ESP32 build). Control it from your phone, voice, a cheap Zigbee button — or your old Harmony. Nothing to subscribe to, nothing to discontinue.

Done for you: A professionally programmed URC remote. One button per activity, built for your exact equipment, and the family never has to touch an app.

Common Questions

Do Logitech Harmony remotes still work?

Yes. Logitech stopped making them in 2021 but kept the app and setup servers running for existing owners, so remotes already set up keep working. The risk is that you could lose the ability to change the setup if that cloud support ever ends.

Why did Logitech discontinue Harmony?

Logitech did not give a detailed reason. Commonly cited factors are a shrinking market as smart TVs and streaming remotes took over, the ongoing cost of maintaining a large cloud database of device codes, and Logitech focusing on faster-growing products.

Can I use my Harmony Hub with Home Assistant?

Yes. Home Assistant has a built-in Harmony integration that controls the hub over your home network, so you can start activities from the Home Assistant app, voice assistants and automations.

What is the best replacement for a Harmony remote?

For budget setups, SofaBaton. For enthusiasts, Unfolded Circle. For a local setup that cannot be discontinued, Home Assistant with an IR blaster. For a professionally programmed system, a URC remote.

Can I flash new firmware onto a Harmony remote?

Not practically. Harmony firmware is closed and there is no maintained open-source replacement. Controlling the hub through Home Assistant gets most of the benefit without flashing anything.
