URC VS CONTROL4: WHICH ONE DO YOU ACTUALLY NEED?

Both make one button run your whole setup. The real question isn't which brand is better — it's whether you need one room handled or your whole house.

The Short Answer

One TV room with too many remotes? A programmed URC remote. It's the fastest, cheapest way to get “press Watch TV and everything just works.”

Whole house — lights, music in every room, cameras, locks, one app for all of it? Now you're comparing URC Total Control with Control4, and the installer you choose matters as much as the brand.

What Both Of Them Do

URC and Control4 are professional control systems. Unlike a store-bought universal remote, they're programmed for your exact gear by an installer. Both give you activity buttons (one press turns on the right devices and picks the right inputs), power that stays in sync, and favourite channels on buttons.

Both are sold through authorized dealers with dealer-only programming software. That's why you can't just download an app and set one up yourself — and why a remote can get “stuck” after you swap a TV.

Where URC Wins

It scales down. URC starts with a single remote. For one living room it can be just the remote; if the gear is hidden in a cabinet, a small base station sends the commands. You pay for one room, not a whole-home system.

It scales up when you're ready. URC Total Control adds keypads, touchscreens, a phone app, lighting and more. You can start with one room and grow.

Cost. For one or two rooms, URC is usually far less than a full automation system.

Where Control4 Wins

Ecosystem. Control4 is one of the biggest names in home automation, with a large list of supported devices and a wide installer network.

Built for the whole house. If you're building or renovating and want lighting, climate, security, music and video all on one system from day one, Control4 is designed for exactly that.

Watch for: higher starting cost, and an optional subscription for remote access and some features. Ask your dealer what's included.

What Gets Programmed

With either brand it's never just the remote. Depending on the setup it can include a base station or controller, IR emitters on each device, network control for receivers and streaming boxes, wall keypads, the phone app, and settings on the TV itself — like turning off HDMI-CEC so it doesn't fight the remote. More rooms and more devices mean more programming time.

Common Questions

Is URC cheaper than Control4?

Usually, yes. A single-room URC remote setup starts in the low hundreds including programming, while Control4 systems start with a controller and are normally sold as a larger project. For a whole home with lighting and security, the gap narrows and the dealer matters more than the brand.

Can I program URC or Control4 myself?

Generally no. Both brands sell through authorized dealers and use dealer-only programming software, so setup and later changes are done by an installer.

Which one is better for a single TV room?

URC. A programmed URC remote, with or without a small base station, handles one room's TV, cable box, soundbar and streaming boxes for a fraction of the cost of a full automation system.

Which one is better for a whole smart home?

Both brands do whole-home systems (URC Total Control and Control4). Control4 has a larger installer network and a broad list of supported devices; URC Total Control is often priced lower. Compare dealer quotes for your house.

Does Control4 have a monthly fee?

Control4 has an optional subscription for remote access and some features. Ask your dealer what is included before you buy, since it varies by setup.
