Smart Home Wiring Guide

A practical prewire plan for a reliable Home Assistant home: what to run, where it should terminate, which devices benefit most from wire, and where wireless connections make more sense.

1. Decide where wire matters most

A good smart home is rarely all-wired or all-wireless. Wire the fixed, high-bandwidth and hard-to-service devices. Use wireless for retrofit locations, moving devices and low-power sensors where cable access is unreasonable.

Best default: create a wired network backbone, use PoE for fixed devices, and add Zigbee, Z-Wave or Thread for low-power sensors and controls. Wireless should extend the system—not carry every critical function by itself.

2. Cable types and what they do

Cat6 Ethernet

Home-run Cat6 to the rack for cameras, access points, TVs, offices, wall panels, garage controllers and other fixed network devices. PoE can carry power and data on one cable.

22/2 security cable

Common for passive magnetic door/window contacts and simple dry-contact devices. Individual runs make every opening a separate, easy-to-troubleshoot zone.

22/4 security cable

Common for powered PIR motion sensors or other devices that need two conductors for low-voltage power and two for an alarm contact. Verify the selected device.

PIR12V typical

18/5 or 18/8 thermostat cable

Use the conductor count required by the HVAC design and leave spares when practical. Heat pumps, accessories and zoning may need more conductors than a basic thermostat.

Speaker cable

Use in-wall-rated speaker cable sized for the distance and load. Home-run audio zones to the amplifier location and label left/right and room at both ends.

Conduit and pull string

Conduit protects future options where cable needs will change. Prioritize rack-to-attic, rack-to-basement/crawlspace, garage, exterior service points and between floors.

Future-proofingService path
Do not guess cable ratings. Select in-wall, riser, plenum, outdoor, direct-burial or shielded cable only when the route and environment require it. Keep low-voltage and line-voltage work separated as required.

4. Central rack and topology

Bring low-voltage home runs to a dry, accessible equipment area. The rack should support the network and automation core without depending on cloud access.

5. Installation sequence

  1. Survey: mark every camera view, opening, access point, TV, office, sensor, controller and equipment location.
  2. Choose the rack: confirm service access, power, cooling, cable pathways and future expansion.
  3. Create a cable schedule: give every run a unique ID before cable is pulled.
  4. Pull and protect: avoid sharp bends, crushing, improper staples and unapproved penetrations. Maintain service loops.
  5. Separate systems: follow required separation from line voltage and use the proper pathway, box and firestopping method.
  6. Label both ends: use permanent machine-printed labels that match the schedule.
  7. Test before walls close: test every conductor/run, correct faults and photograph open walls with measurements.
  8. Terminate and certify: use patch panels and proper terminations; test installed performance to the level the project requires.
  9. Commission the network first: bring up switching, PoE, access points, addressing and UPS before automation devices.
  10. Document: record port, zone, destination, device model, cable type, test result and photos.
Important: building, fire, electrical and low-voltage rules vary by location and project. Use qualified or licensed trades where required. Smoke/CO, intrusion/fire panels, HVAC safeties and electrical protection must remain code-compliant and able to operate independently of Home Assistant.
