1. Decide where wire matters most
A good smart home is rarely all-wired or all-wireless. Wire the fixed, high-bandwidth and hard-to-service devices. Use wireless for retrofit locations, moving devices and low-power sensors where cable access is unreasonable.

2. Cable types and what they do
Cat6 Ethernet
Home-run Cat6 to the rack for cameras, access points, TVs, offices, wall panels, garage controllers and other fixed network devices. PoE can carry power and data on one cable.
DataPoEHome run22/2 security cable
Common for passive magnetic door/window contacts and simple dry-contact devices. Individual runs make every opening a separate, easy-to-troubleshoot zone.
ContactsDry contact22/4 security cable
Common for powered PIR motion sensors or other devices that need two conductors for low-voltage power and two for an alarm contact. Verify the selected device.
PIR12V typical18/5 or 18/8 thermostat cable
Use the conductor count required by the HVAC design and leave spares when practical. Heat pumps, accessories and zoning may need more conductors than a basic thermostat.
HVACControlSpeaker cable
Use in-wall-rated speaker cable sized for the distance and load. Home-run audio zones to the amplifier location and label left/right and room at both ends.
AudioIn-wall ratedConduit and pull string
Conduit protects future options where cable needs will change. Prioritize rack-to-attic, rack-to-basement/crawlspace, garage, exterior service points and between floors.

4. Central rack and topology
Bring low-voltage home runs to a dry, accessible equipment area. The rack should support the network and automation core without depending on cloud access.
Rack allowances
- Reserve at least 25% switch-port capacity and check the total PoE watt budget—not only the port count.
- Place router, switches, Home Assistant, NVR and essential controllers on a correctly sized UPS.
- Keep radios away from metal enclosures and USB 3 interference; use an extension cable when the radio vendor recommends it.
- Leave patch-panel, shelf, power and ventilation space for future expansion.
5. Installation sequence
- Survey: mark every camera view, opening, access point, TV, office, sensor, controller and equipment location.
- Choose the rack: confirm service access, power, cooling, cable pathways and future expansion.
- Create a cable schedule: give every run a unique ID before cable is pulled.
- Pull and protect: avoid sharp bends, crushing, improper staples and unapproved penetrations. Maintain service loops.
- Separate systems: follow required separation from line voltage and use the proper pathway, box and firestopping method.
- Label both ends: use permanent machine-printed labels that match the schedule.
- Test before walls close: test every conductor/run, correct faults and photograph open walls with measurements.
- Terminate and certify: use patch panels and proper terminations; test installed performance to the level the project requires.
- Commission the network first: bring up switching, PoE, access points, addressing and UPS before automation devices.
- Document: record port, zone, destination, device model, cable type, test result and photos.
