POWERBRIDGE KITS: WHEN THE BOX FIGHTS YOUR MOUNT
Everyone compares these kits on price. Almost nobody asks the question that actually matters on the day: is there room behind your TV for both the box and the bracket?
The Constraint Nobody Mentions
An in-wall power kit puts a recessed outlet on the wall behind your television. Simple enough — except that the wall behind your television is already spoken for.
Your mount is there. The wall plate sits dead centre over the studs, and the arms reach out from it toward the corners of the screen. That hardware isn't negotiable: it goes where the framing is, because the framing is what holds the weight.
So the power box has to fit in what's left. And the amount left over depends almost entirely on how big your TV is — which is why two people can buy the identical kit and have completely different experiences with it.
Big Screens Forgive. Small Screens Don't.
At 65″ and up, there's a lot of wall hidden behind that panel. The mount takes the middle, and there's still open drywall out toward the edges in every direction. Put the box more or less anywhere sensible and the screen covers it. Nobody ever knows.
At 55″ and under, that margin mostly disappears. The panel isn't much wider than the bracket itself, and the usable area shrinks to a narrow band. Now a deep, wide plastic enclosure genuinely struggles to find a home:
- It gets pushed off to one side, far enough that the cord has to run sideways before it can go anywhere.
- Or it drops lower than it should, creeping toward the bottom edge of the screen — and on a small TV, close to the edge means visible.
- Or it lands somewhere that fouls the bracket arms, which is the version that gets discovered with the TV halfway onto the wall.
That's the “why is the outlet in that weird spot?” result. It isn't carelessness. It's a box that was too bulky for the space it had to live in.
Depth matters as much as footprint, and it's the one people forget. A low-profile mount holds a TV about an inch off the wall. That inch is your entire clearance budget.
If the box sits proud, or the plug sticks straight out rather than turning down, the screen can't come back flush — it stands off the wall or sits at a slight angle you'll notice from the side forever. A properly recessed enclosure and a right-angle plug are what keep a flush mount actually flush. Full-motion arms hold the TV further out anyway, so they're far more forgiving here.
Why The Chicago-Style PowerBridge Is Metal

It takes up less room
Steel is strong in thin sections in a way plastic isn't. A plastic enclosure needs bulk to hold its shape — thick walls, reinforcing ribs, generous corners. A metal one does the same job in a slimmer, tighter package. Less depth, less footprint, and more of that limited wall behind a small TV left over for the mount.
That's the whole reason the size problem above is mostly a plastic-kit problem.
The wiring is jacketed in metal
The run between the two plates is armoured — the conductors are enclosed in a metal jacket rather than a plastic sheath. Inside a wall cavity, where nobody will ever see it again, that's meaningful protection: it resists crushing, and it stands up to a stray screw or nail far better than plastic does. It's the same thinking behind metal-clad wiring generally.
It also feels like what it is when you hold it. These are built, not moulded.

That last row is the one worth sitting on. This isn't the premium upgrade — it costs about what a store-bought solution costs once it's fitted. $80 for the PowerBridge, $80 to fit it. You're choosing between two options at roughly the same price, one of which is metal and slimmer.
What It Actually Fixes
The problem being solved here is small and extremely annoying: the cluster of cords hanging beneath a beautifully mounted television.
You did everything right. The TV is level, it's at the right height, it looks like it belongs there — and then there's a power cord, an HDMI, and probably a soundbar lead dangling down the wall into a power strip. The wall-mount look is undone by the six inches under the screen.
An in-wall power kit takes the power cord out of that picture entirely. Combined with running the signal cables in the wall, what's left at the bottom is minimal to nothing.
What ours adds is that the fix doesn't create a second eyesore. A chunky plastic housing at the baseboard is still a chunky plastic housing — you've moved the problem down the wall rather than removed it.
Worth being clear about scope: this extends power you already have to a better spot. It doesn't add a circuit. If you want a genuine new receptacle wired in behind the TV, that's electrical work and we price it separately at $250.
Which One You Actually Need
- 65″ and up, full-motion mount: you have room to spare. Any decent kit will disappear behind that screen. Choose on price and looks at the baseboard.
- 55″ and under, flush or low-profile mount: this is where bulk bites. Slim matters, depth matters, and it's worth caring what you put in the wall.
